Help for students with children or other dependants in 2010/11

Types of finance available

Childcare Grant

Key facts

  • Childcare Grant is available to students with one or more children in approved or registered childcare
  • You apply for it on the same application as for your other financial support
  • You do not need to pay it back
  • You can only receive Childcare Grant if you, or your partner, are not receiving the childcare element of the Working Tax Credit. You must choose one or the other

How much can you get?

The amount you can get depends on your circumstances. You could receive up to 85% of your childcare costs up to a maximum of:

  • £148.75 per week if you have one child in approved or registered childcare.
  • £255 per week if you have two or more children in registered or approved childcare.

Parents’ Learning Allowance

Key facts

  • Parents’ Learning Allowance is available to students with dependant children
  • It’s intended to help with any course-related costs
  • You apply for it on the same application as for your other financial support
  • You do not need to pay it back

How much can you get?

The amount you can get depends on your circumstances. You could receive between £50 and £1,538 for the year.
