Help for students with children or other dependants in 2016/17

Types of finance available

Childcare Grant

Key facts

  • Childcare Grant is available to students with one or more children in approved or registered childcare
  • You apply for it on the same application as for your other financial support
  • You don't need to pay it back
  • You can only receive Childcare Grant if you, or your partner, aren't receiving the childcare element of the Working Tax Credit, Tax-Free Childcare from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) or help with childcare costs from the Department of Health (DoH).

How much can you get?

The amount you can get depends on your circumstances. You could receive up to 85% of your childcare costs up to a maximum of:

  • £148.75 per week if you have one child in approved or registered childcare.
  • £255 per week if you have two or more children in registered or approved childcare.

If you don’t know who your childcare provider will be at the time you’re applying for Childcare Grant you should still complete and return the Childcare Grant application form.

If you can’t give childcare provider details at the time you apply, the maximum you can get is capped at £115 per week. Once you supply your childcare provider’s details you’ll be reassessed and will receive the full amount you are entitled to.

Parents’ Learning Allowance

  • It’s intended to help with any course-related costs
  • You apply for it on the same application as for your other financial support
  • You do not need to pay it back

How much can you get?

The amount you can get depends on your circumstances. You could receive between £50 and £1,538 for the year.
