Apply online – the best way to apply for student finance

Register with us

To apply online you first need to register with us.

When you register, you’ll be given a Customer Reference Number and asked to set-up a password and choose a secret question and answer.

You’ll need these every time you want to log in or contact us to discuss your account.

Only new students applying for student finance for the very first time need to register.
If you are continuing on the same course as last year you can log in with your existing Customer Reference Number.

Log in and apply

After you’ve registered, you’re ready to log in and start your application.
Click on Login and follow the on-screen instructions to access your account.

Before you begin, you will need:

  • details of the university or college and course you’re applying to
  • your course start date
  • your bank details
  • your National Insurance number
  • information about your current income (if you have any)
  • the name and address of anyone who will provide information in support of your application

Click 2011/12 Apply for Student Support on your account homepage to start your student finance application.

Answer all the questions carefully. You can complete the sections of the application in any order and based on your answers the application will automatically display any extra questions that we might need you to answer.

Depending on the type of student finance you apply for, your parents or partner may also need to answer some questions. You will get instructions at the appropriate point of the application if this is relevant for you.

If you get stuck, you will find a Show Help option for most questions with useful tips on exactly what we are looking for.

And you can save your progress at every stage of the application. So, should you need to, you can exit and come back later, starting again exactly where you left off.

Submitting your application

After you’ve answered all the questions, you’ll see an estimate of the student finance you might be entitled to receive.

You’ll have an opportunity to review your answers and correct any mistakes you’ve made. Once you’re sure that everything is correct, click Continue and move on to the terms and conditions.

Read these carefully and accept if you agree to them. You will be shown your student finance estimate and given one final opportunity to make changes. If you’re happy with the answers you’ve given, click Submit application.

Evidence

After you’ve submitted your application you will see a summary of the evidence you need to send us before we can process your application.

You will be asked to indicate which items you will send to prove your identity, financial circumstances and other information. The address you send these items to will also be provided.

We recommend printing the evidence summary, using it as a checklist and returning it with your items.

That’s it

Your application is fully submitted and will be processed by your Education and Library Board.

See Student finance, what happens when you apply? for information on what to expect next.
