The best way to apply for student finance is online.
To apply online for student finance you first need to Register
When you register you give us some personal details like your name, date of birth, National Insurance Number, address and a few other things. This allows us to check you haven’t already registered on our system before.
You must have a National Insurance number in order to receive any payments from us. If you don’t have one you can find out how to get a National Insurance number here:
You’ll be given a unique 11 digit Customer Reference Number. This is very important, you’ll need it every time you want to log into your account, and if you need to contact us. You should make a note of it and keep it in a safe place.
You’ll also have to set a password and choose a secret question and answer. Again, you’ll need both these pieces of information every time you want to log into your account or contact us so you should choose something personal to you that’s easy to remember.
If you ever forget any of your login details you can get them online by clicking on Find out your login details on the Login page. When you reset your password and secret answer a new one is emailed to the address we have on record for you so it’s very important to keep your email address up to date.
Log in and Apply
Once you’ve registered and got your Customer Reference Number, password and secret answer you’re ready to log into your account and start your application.
From the home page click on Login.
Follow the instructions to enter your login details and access your account page.
Near the bottom of the My Account page click Apply for Student Support. This will start your student finance application.
Answer all the questions carefully. If you get stuck, most questions have help which you can read by clicking Show Help.
You can save your progress at any time, so you can exit the application and come back to it again later.
Depending on the type of student finance you want to apply for, your parents or partner may also need to answer some questions on the application. You will get instructions at the appropriate point of the application if this is relevant for you.
Finishing your application
Once you’ve answered all the questions you’ll see an estimate of the student finance you may be entitled to. This is based on the answers you have provided in your application.
At this point you have the chance to review your answers. If you need to make any changes, click on the appropriate section name on the left hand side of the page to get back to that section. Once you’re sure everything is correct click Continue.
Next you will see a set of terms and conditions, which you should read. Once you accept them you will be shown your estimate one last time and then click on Submit Application.
Your application will be submitted and you will not be able to make any more changes to it.
After you’ve submitted your application you will see the Evidence Summary screen.
This page allows you to choose the evidence you are going to send us to prove your identity, financial circumstances and other information. We need this evidence before we can process your application.
If we need evidence from you we cannot pay you any money until we have received and processed it.
Once you have taken a note of the evidence you need to send and the address to send it to you can click Exit to get back to your account screen.
